the weed called digital

Yesterday in Tescos when I was in the bread aisle, I came across the rather unusual apparition of a digital toaster. there were several of them stacked next to the place where they hold sliced bread. now, what is the difference between my toaster in the kitchen (besides the fact that mine has some toast stuck in it from when I nearly burned the house down a few years ago) and the fancy digital one in Tescos? as long as they both cook toast, there is practically no difference!

the whole world is going digital crazy! suddenly it's digital switchover, digital clocks, digital radio, digital TV, digital toasters...I know the difference between digital and analouge waves so I can understand the ideas behind digital TV and radio, but digital toaster? toaster's don't pick up waves of any sort!

I must be the only person under 50 who is still in awe of the digital clock. You can't beat a good ol' ticking clock, so why digital clocks are necessary is beyond me. sure, they can show the time to the exact second but what is the point in that? if I wanted to check the time for the Simpsons, then I wouldn't make sure that I was in front of the telly at exactly 18:00:00 because it never starts exactly on time so if you did that then you might miss what Bart's lines are! I owned a digital watch once and I didn't like it so I soon swapped it for one that ticked :)

I have a digital TV in my room, but the digital channels on it don't actually work. I almost always change it to analogue, and the other times I just can't be bothered to watch it. The only thing better from this TV to my old one is that if I'm watching a DVD, the disc doesn't get stuck every so often. That's another thing, am I the only one left who's mourning video?

I must confess, I own a digital radio. I have it because I want to listen to BBC7 which can't be picked up from my analogue one (but Heart FM can't be picked up from my digital one, so it's best to have both). BBC7 basically has programmes which were on BBC4 from last week to the 1930's, but I love it! the only problem is, the alarm function doesn't work because, unless it's switched on, the time is stuck at when it was last turned off. other than that minor inconvenience, digital Radio and DVDs are the best thing that digital seems to have produced.

that was quite a rant, but I guess there's a lot to be said for digital :)

thank you for reading!
